Police have arrested the prime suspect along with one other person over the killing of a teenage girl in Madhabdi of Narsingdi, an incident investigators say was meant to suppress an earlier rape.
On Friday around 9pm, officers arrested one suspect from Maona in Gazipur and another from Gouripur in Mymensingh, Narsingdi Police Superintendent Md Abdullah Al Faruk said.
The arrestees are the main suspect Nur Mohammad alias Noora, 28, and Hazrat Ali, 40.
Earlier on Friday afternoon, Dhaka Range Deputy Inspector General Rezaul Karim Mallick reported the arrest of five suspects.
With these arrests, police have now held seven of the nine suspects in the case.
Meanwhile, the Mahishashura Union BNP Vice-President Ahmmad Ali Dewan, who was previously arrested in connection with the girl’s rape and murder, has been expelled by the Sadar Upazila committee.
The decision was communicated in a letter at 10pm.
Police and locals said that 15 days ago, on her way home from work, the girl was abducted by a group of five to six people led by Noora, who allegedly raped her.
The matter had been locally “settled” before the murder.
According to the girl’s stepfather, he was taking his daughter to her maternal aunt’s house on Wednesday. On the way, at Baraitala intersection, a group led by Noora snatched her from him.
Despite searching for hours, family members could not locate her.
Witnesses said the girl’s body was found in a mustard field the following morning with her scarf wrapped around her neck.
Family members later identified the body after being alerted by the police.
