Separate bus crashes leave over 50 injured in Chattogram

They include students of BGC Trust University, whose bus collided head-on with another bus near the Patiya bypass

More than 50 people, including students of a private university, have been injured in two separate road accidents in Chattogram's Patiya Upazila.

The accidents occurred on Wednesday along the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway, one near the Shantirhat area and the other on the Patiya bypass, according to police.

Witnesses said that one of the buses involved in the crash near the bypass was carrying students of BGC Trust University, while the other, involved in the Shantirhat accident, was transporting passengers to Patiya.

Several people were injured when the bus transporting BGC Trust University students collided head-on with another bus in the bypass area, said Inspector Jasim Uddin of the Patiya Highway Police.

He added that a separate passenger bus had an accident near Shantirhat and veered off the road, but no one suffered any serious injury. The driver and his assistant fled the scene.

Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder of the Chattogram Medical College Hospital Police Outpost said at least 25 people from the Shantirhat accident were brought to the hospital, but none were in critical condition.

However, no students from BGC Trust University had been brought to the hospital, according to him.

BGC Trust University Assistant Proctor Sarwar Kamal said the bus was transporting students from Moijjartek to the university when the accident occurred. A total of 29 students were injured.

He added that all injured students were admitted to the BGC Trust Medical College Hospital, and the university authorities are covering the cost of treatment.

Among those brought in, 23 were discharged after receiving first aid, while the rest are still undergoing treatment.
