Bangladesh has called for respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries amid rising tensions in Iran and across the Middle East.
The position was outlined in a media statement issued late Saturday after an emergency meeting at the foreign ministry, which expressed “deep concern” over the escalating conflict and the safety of Bangladeshis in the region.
“Conflict never brings a lasting solution; peaceful settlement is possible only through dialogue, mutual respect and commitment to international law,” the ministry said, urging all sides to exercise maximum restraint and intensify diplomatic efforts.
Dhaka also reaffirmed its principled stance in favour of peace, stability and security in the Middle East, calling on the international community to help restore calm and create conditions for dialogue.
The government has begun measures to ensure the safety of the Bangladesh mission in Tehran, its diplomats and staff, as well as Bangladeshi students studying in Iran.
Officials said they held a telephone conversation with the head of the mission as part of the effort.
Following the latest US and Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory attacks, Bangladesh has suspended all Middle East-bound flights until further notice.
The government has requested destination countries to allow entry for Bangladeshis once the situation improves, particularly those currently stranded.
Authorities at domestic airports have been instructed to assist workers affected by the travel disruption, while regular communication is being maintained with relevant foreign authorities.
Several countries have given a positive response to Dhaka’s request, the statement said.
The emergency meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, State Minister Shama Obaed Islam, the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam and senior officials of the ministry.
