Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed, an accused in the killing of former Teknaf municipal councillor Ekramul Haque, has been taken into military custody.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said action would be taken against him in accordance with the law.
Ekramul was killed in a so-called gunfight in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf on the night of May 26, 2018.
He was once president of the Upazila Jubo League.
Miftah Uddin was commander of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-7 at the time of the high-profile killing, when Cox's Bazar fell under the battalion's jurisdiction.
The prosecution formally filed charges over the incident with the International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday, in a case treated as a crime against humanity.
Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 10 others, including Miftah, were named as suspects.
Taking the formal charges into cognisance, the tribunal issued arrest warrants against eight absconding accused and directed the three already in custody be produced before the court.
News of Brigadier General Miftah being taken into military custody in connection with the case emerged on Monday.
The other suspects are: former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former bridges minister Obaidul Quader, former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed, former MP Abdur Rahman Bodi, army Brigadier General Mahbub Alam, retired Colonel Anwar Latif Khan, retired Major Ruhul Amin, former DGFI officers squadron leader Nazmus Sakib, and Lieutenant Commander Ashekur Rahman.
