The Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) has fined businesses Tk 6.7 million and filed 25 cases in a week as part of a nationwide crackdown on food safety violations.
The actions were taken between Aug 16 and 22 through inspections, mobile courts and summary trials in Dhaka and several districts, the agency said in a statement on Sunday.
The largest penalties came in Chattogram, where four businesses were fined a combined Tk 4 million on Saturday after inspectors found violations of the Food Safety Act, 2013. Four cases were also filed.
In Dhaka, seven businesses were inspected during the week. Three were fined a total of Tk 300,000 and three cases were filed.
Mobile courts also operated at 15 businesses in Pabna, Bogura, Madaripur, Narsingdi, Brahmanbaria, Dhaka, Faridpur, Gazipur, Chattogram, Nilphamari, Lakshmipur and Manikganj.
Those drives resulted in Tk 2.4 million in fines and 15 cases.
A summary trial in Brahmanbaria on Aug 17 led to three regular cases, although no fines were imposed.
The BFSA said it had also intensified inspections of food establishments across the country.
A total of 220 establishments, including markets, hotels and restaurants, bakeries, sweet shops and food manufacturing and processing businesses, were inspected during the period.
The authority said the inspections focused on compliance with food safety rules covering production, storage, serving, processing and marketing, with businesses given instructions or facing legal action where necessary.
The latest figures mark a sharp increase from the previous week, when seven businesses were fined a total of Tk 1 million and seven cases were filed.
The BFSA also continued public awareness campaigns on food safety through television, radio and social media.
