Thunder has rolled over Dhaka as lightning flashed across the sky, and rain pelted streets as nor’wester winds whipped through the capital.
Dhaka and surrounding areas experienced rain on Wednesday evening, as gusty winds from the north and northwest created conditions for nor’wester storms, meteorologists said.
Shahnaz Sultana, a senior weather official, told bdnews24.com: “From Wednesday through Sunday, scattered rainfall is expected across the country.
“Winds from the north and northwest… brought isolated showers, stormy winds, thunderstorms or hail in different areas.”
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecast that some parts of Sylhet Division, as well as selected areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, could experience temporary gusty or squally winds accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms on Wednesday.
Isolated hail is also possible in some areas.
Day and night temperatures across the country are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
In the past 24 hours, the highest temperatures were recorded at 34°C in Rangamati and Feni, while the lowest dropped to 17.6°C in Tentulia, according to Met Office data.
Looking ahead, the department predicts scattered rainfall, gusty winds, thunderstorms, and hail across the country through Sunday.
On Thursday, gusty or squally winds with thunderstorms may affect parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, while isolated showers may strike Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions.
Day and night temperatures will remain largely unchanged.
With Eid-ul-Fitr likely to be celebrated on Friday or Saturday, depending on the sighting of the moon, the Met Office has warned of scattered rainfall and thunderstorms in several regions over both days.
Friday’s forecast indicates temporary squally winds with lightning and isolated hail in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, with minor dips in daytime temperatures.
Saturday may see similar conditions in most divisions, with daytime temperatures slightly lower while nights remain steady.
On Sunday, scattered rain and thunderstorms are again expected in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet, as well as isolated areas in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram, with temperatures rising slightly nationwide.
