An elderly man has died of a suspected heatstroke while waiting in a long queue for fuel at a filling station in Rajshahi’s Mohanpur Upazila amid an intense heatwave.

The incident occurred at the Keshorhat Filling Station around 12pm on Wednesday, confirmed Mohanpur Upazila administrator (UNO) Fahima Binte Akhter.

The dead, 60-year-old Abdul Alam, also known as Alauddin, was from Bakshail village in Kesharhat Municipality.

Rajshahi has been reeling under a severe heatwave for three days.

On Wednesday, the local weather office recorded a maximum temperature of 40°C, the highest in the district so far this season.

Witnesses said Alauddin had been standing in the scorching sun for a long time to buy fuel when he suddenly fell ill and collapsed.

Bystanders took him to the Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced him dead.

UNO Fahima visited the scene following the report.

"I have learnt from the site that the man died of heatstroke. If the family applies for government assistance or compensation, the Upazila administration will provide all possible support," she said.

Mohanpur Police chief Mizanur Rahman said officers visited the victim’s home to gather details.

As the family had no complaints, the body was handed over for burial without a postmortem examination.
