An elderly woman has died and her husband remains in critical condition after they were allegedly drugged and robbed by a domestic worker at their home in Dhaka’s Uttara.
Police said 62‑year‑old Ayesha Akhter and her husband, 68‑year‑old Anwar Hossain, were found unconscious at their flat in Sector 7 on Tuesday evening.
Ayesha was declared dead at the hospital, while her husband was admitted in serious condition.
Officers suspect a domestic worker, hired only two days earlier, administered the sedatives before looting valuables.
Police said they received an emergency call around 7:45pm and rushed to the couple’s fifth-floor apartment.
“No identity card or phone number was kept. It seems she was picked up from the street to work,” said Uttara West Police chief Kazi Md Rafiqul Ahmed.
"We suspect the worker mixed sedatives into their food before fleeing with valuables from the flat," Rafiqul told bdnews24.com.
The couple lived with their younger son, who was away at the time.
Police are searching for the worker, identified with her single name Marufa.
The incident came hours after a Dhaka court urged households to be more cautious when hiring domestic workers, while delivering a verdict in a separate case.
The court sentenced Suravi Akhter Nahida to death for killing Afroz Begum and her domestic worker Diti seven years ago, and acquitted another suspect.
