Sadek Khan, general secretary of the Dhaka City North unit of the Awami League, has been selected to contest from the area, which consists of Mohammadpur-Adabar and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Thana where Nanak was elected as MP in the last two elections.
A clash took place between two groups of Awami League from Mohammadpur and Adabar during the party’s nomination form sale on Nov 10. Two teenagers were run over and killed by a pickup truck in the incident.
The clash occurred between the supporters of Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Sadek Khan.
Nanak, who is also known as former chairman of Jubo League and is the former general secretary of Chhatra League, was elected as a candidate of the Awami League and later served as a minister in 2008.
He was elected unopposed in 2014 but did not receive a spot on the cabinet.
The Awami League began distributing the confirmation letters for the candidates on Sunday at the Awami League’s central offices on Bangabandhu Avenue.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader says that confirmation letters will be sent to ‘about 230’ candidates for the 300 seats up for grabs in the election. The names will be announced officially on Monday.
During the ninth parliamentary election, the Awami League-led alliance allied itself with the Jatiya Party. A total of 264 Awami League candidates had run for office alongside Jatiya Party candidates at 49 seats.
The Awami League had won 230 seats, while the Jatiya Party had won 27.
