Chief medical officer of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Dr Debashish Chowdhury told bdnews24.com on that the former national captain underwent surgery for exertional compartment syndrome at the North Shore Private Hospital around 2:30pm (local time).
The surgery was performed by Dr Martin Sullivan, a leading international foot and ankle surgeon and an expert in treating foot and ankle conditions.
Dr Chowdhury talked to Shakib after the operation. He will be released from hospital on Wenesday. The physicians told Shakib that “It needed half an hour to conduct the surgery. The physician told Shakib that he was satisfied at the surgery.”
Dr Chowdhury said that the physician would check the cricketer after a week and later advise him to start running.
“He’s expected to fly home on March 6,” he said.
Dr Chowdhury said that Shakib will have to rest for maximum six weeks after the procedure. “It’s expected that he will come round before the Zimbabwe tour (in April).”
The surgery was the reason Shakib was ruled out of Bangladesh's tour of Sri Lanka. He missed the five-match one-day International series against West Indies in November-December 2012 because of a stress reaction on his shin bone.
He made a comeback in the Bangladesh Premier League, where he was diagnosed with an exercise-induced problem that causes pain over the front of the shin bone.
Shakib flew to Sydney on Feb 20, the day after the BPL final. He was assessed by Dr. Scott Burne on Friday who recommended the surgery.
