The chief executive of British chip designer Arm Holdings believes artificial intelligence could help find a cure for cancer within the current generation's lifetime.
Rene Haas told the BBC that modelling how cancer affects DNA markers remains too complex for humans and existing AI systems, but increasingly sophisticated computers and larger datasets could eventually solve the problem.
“I believe in our lifetime, AI will help cure cancer,” he was reported as saying by The Guardian.
“Modelling how a DNA marker is impacted by cancer – it’s too complex a problem, not only for humans today, but the computers that run AI.
“However, going forward, as we feed more and more of the models into these computers, and the computers get more sophisticated to run the models, they’re going to solve it.”
AI is already being used in cancer research and diagnosis. Earlier this year, the NHS said more than 4 million patients had received faster lung diagnoses through AI-powered X-ray technology, The Guardian reported.
Haas also predicted that AI would drive the widespread use of humanoid robots within the next five years, although he said chip shortages were slowing progress.
Arm, headquartered in Cambridge and listed in New York, provides chip designs to around 500 companies, including Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm, and Nvidia.
It employs more than 7,000 people and is Britain's largest technology company by market value, according to The Guardian.
