ChatGPT has gone offline in a major outage, disrupting services across a wide range of apps and platforms that rely on OpenAI's technology.

Visitors to the chatbot reported unusual behaviour on the site, including attempts to download an unidentified file, The Independent reported.

The outage also affected Codex, OpenAI's programming tool, and caused knock-on disruptions to third-party apps and services built on OpenAI's systems.

OpenAI said it was aware of the problem and had identified a potential fix, but shortly after said it was "still experiencing degraded performance."

Some users reported minor issues with rival chatbots, including Anthropic's Claude and X's Grok, though both continued to work for most users.

The outage prompted a wave of jokes on social media, with users quipping they would have to rely on their own brains at work.
