Chelsea have abandoned plans to loan striker Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich after fellow forward Liam Delap suffered a hamstring injury, forcing the club to recall the player from Germany.
The decision came hours after Chelsea's 2-0 win over Fulham, where Delap limped off after 14 minutes, with manager Enzo Maresca later indicating he could be sidelined for up to eight weeks, The Athletic reports.
“When you have two strikers it is enough, when one of them is injured for weeks it is not enough,” Maresca was quoted as saying by The Athletic at full time on Saturday.
Bayern had agreed a season-long loan with an €80 million option to buy, and the 24-year-old forward was en route for a medical in Munich.
“Chelsea have informed us that they want the player back – after we had reached an agreement yesterday and were allowed to conduct the medical,” Bayern Munich’s Director of Sport Max Eberl said to Sky Sports.
“Now the situation is that the boy is in Munich and we have to send him back.
“That’s the current state of affairs, I can’t look into the future.”
The Senegal international’s future at Chelsea had been uncertain throughout the summer, having slipped behind new arrivals Delap and Joao Pedro in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
He was omitted from Maresca’s squad for all three league matches, as both the club and the striker explored a potential move during the final weeks of the summer window.
