A dramatic shift has shaken the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as Tamim Iqbal formally assumed the role of board chief while outgoing president Aminul Islam Bulbul left office amid the announcement of a new ad hoc committee.
Tamim’s appointment was announced shortly after 4pm on Tuesday, and by 6pm, the former national captain set foot at the BCB office to take his place at the helm, signalling a fresh chapter in Bangladesh cricket.
His tenure will extend for a maximum of three months, during which the ad hoc committee under his leadership must organise elections, with Tamim expected to play a central role.
Earlier in the day, Bulbul and his executive board quietly left the premises.
Rumours of the board’s dissolution had circulated for days, but confirmation came only after Bulbul returned from inspecting the Purbachal ground with outgoing Grounds Committee chief Khaled Mashud.
The National Sports Council (NSC) had formed a committee to investigate alleged irregularities in the last BCB elections, and its findings prompted the board’s removal and the announcement of Tamim’s leadership.
As Tamim entered, the BCB compound swelled with supporters, journalists, and visitors, who greeted the new chairman with processions and slogans -- a spectacle reminiscent of previous leadership transitions under past presidents Nazmul Hassan, Faruque Ahmed, and Bulbul.
Once in office, Tamim immediately held brief meetings with different departments and called the first ad hoc committee session the same day.
Board members were later seen arriving at the office for follow-up discussions.
Attempts to contact Bulbul and several former directors were largely unsuccessful, with many phones unanswered or switched off, leaving their responses to the sudden developments unknown.
