Liverpool are on course to sign French striker Hugo Ekitike on a deal worth more than £70 million ($93.78 million) from Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt, BBC Sport says.
The Premier League champions, as per journalist Fabrizio Romano, have got the go-ahead from the young Frenchman and are aiming to have the transfer wrapped up within the next few days.
Newcastle were also in the race to sign the 23-year-old but their initial offer of £70 million has been rejected by Frankfurt, leaving the Merseyside club in pole position to get Ekitike’s signature.
The Reds have also been linked with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, making their interest known to the club but the Magpies are adamant the Swede is not for sale at any price.
The signing of a central striker will be the fourth signing of the summer for Liverpool, having signed midfielder Florian Wirtz (£116 million, $154.42 million), and full-backs Milos Kerkez (£40 million,$53.59 million) and Jeremie Frimpong (£30 million, $40.20 million).
Manager Arne Slot, after not signing any player during his inaugural year, is spending big money this summer in a bid to defend the league title.
