Lamine Yamal’s trademark finish is already familiar: collect the ball on the right, cut inside onto his left foot and bend it into the far corner. Yet the Barcelona teenager is rapidly becoming far more difficult to read.
As The Athletic notes, Yamal’s scoring repertoire has expanded dramatically since he broke into Barcelona’s first team.
His double against Rayo Vallecano on Aug 31 made him the club’s youngest player to reach 50 senior goals, at 19 years and 49 days.
Kylian Mbappe reached the mark at 19 years and 241 days, Erling Haaland at 20 years and 196 days, while Lionel Messi was 21 and Cristiano Ronaldo 22.
Yamal’s early goals often came from lurking at the far post. Then came the signature curlers, first against Athletic Club and Mallorca in 2024, before he began targeting near corners when defenders and goalkeepers anticipated his usual finish.
He has also developed a right foot, scoring against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu after Ferland Mendy denied him the route onto his left.
His movement has changed too. Rather than remaining wide, Yamal increasingly darts infield and times runs beyond the defence, creating chances without relying solely on his one-on-one brilliance.
That evolution was evident against Inter Milan in last season’s Champions League semi-final, when he fought through a crowded defence before bending a shot off the post.
Of his 46 La Liga and Champions League goals, 31 have come with Barcelona either level or behind.
This season, Yamal has already scored from the right inside channel, produced a Messi-esque low finish, chipped Valencia from a tight angle and converted his first senior free kick.
The familiar curler remains deadly. Now, it is merely one weapon among many.
