NASA astronaut Jessica Meir and French astronaut Sophie Adenot have completed a 6.5-hour spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS), marking the sixth time an all-female team has carried out a spacewalk.
The spacewalk was the 284th conducted in support of the station’s assembly, maintenance and upgrades, and the seventh so far this year, GameReactor reports.
NASA astronaut Anil Menon also shared a video showing the astronauts’ exit from inside the station.
During the spacewalk, Adenot remained tethered to the station, while Meir used the station’s robotic arm to travel to the worksites.
According to GameReactor, Meir previously made history as part of the first all-female spacewalk in 2019, alongside fellow NASA astronaut Christina Koch.
Spacewalks allow astronauts to work outside their spacecraft in the vacuum of space. They require extensive preparation because of the risks involved and are essential for tasks such as repairing damaged components, replacing old batteries and maintaining thermal systems.
