Somewhere out in the cosmic wilderness, a black hole just got caught red-handed -- snacking on a star, far from where it's supposed to be.
NASA's Swift Observatory has spotted a rare "orphan" black hole devouring a star well outside the core of its host galaxy -- the farthest out such a feast has ever been witnessed.
Scientists call the phenomenon a tidal disruption event, and this one involves a black hole weighing in at roughly a million Suns, reports NASA.
The cosmic crime scene was first flagged in November 2025, when an AI algorithm sifted through half a million flickers of light detected in a single night and flagged one that looked distinctly out of place.
For a few months, the flare blazed brighter than its entire home galaxy, radiating with the light of 10 billion Suns.
Follow-up checks from ground telescopes in Chile and NASA's Swift confirmed the sighting, clocking the blast at a scorching 54,000F.
Here's the twist: nearly every galaxy has a supermassive black hole anchored at its centre, and star-shredding events like this typically happen right there, once every 100,000 years or so.
Spotting one out in the galactic suburbs was practically unheard of before 2024.
This black hole likely didn't start out so far from home.
Scientists think it may have started life in a smaller galaxy that later merged with a bigger one, getting flung out to the edges in the cosmic collision.
Basically, a case of galactic musical chairs.
Researchers say the find could help them track down more of these wandering black holes hiding in plain sight.
And with new tools like the Vera C Rubin Observatory and NASA's upcoming Roman Space Telescope coming online, astronomers expect to catch plenty more black holes in the act -- some from as far back as 9 billion years in cosmic history.
