Faridpur, Aug 5 (BDNEWS) - Failing to get party nomination, the ruling BNP leader Shah Mohammad Abu Zafar, decided to take part in the August 30 Faridpur-1 by elections as an independent candidate.
Zafar left Dhaka Friday for Faridpur to submit his nomination paper at local election commission (EC) office Saturday, the date of submission of the nomination paper, sources said.
The BNP parliamentary board Thursday, after taking interview of all six aspirants, declared the name of Kazi Sirajul Islam as its candidates for the by-elections.
Shah Mohammad Abu Zafar was one of five other BNP leaders, who appeared before the interview to get party ticket in the elections.
Moniruzzaman Monir, joint secretary of central committee of Jubo Dal, the youth front of BNP, however, decided not to take part in the elections showing respect to the nomination given by the party high-ups.
Meanwhile, a total of eight aspirants collected nomination papers so far for contesting in the by-elections.
The Faridpur-1 constituency fell vacant after Kazi Sirajul Islam, who was elected a parliament member with Awami League ticket, joined BNP.
The main opposition AL decided not to participate in the election.
