The police have arrested Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Annie, publicity secretary of BNP, from his Dhanmondi residence.

The former MP was taken into custody at 3 am on Wednesday and brought to Dhanmondi Police Station.

"He has been arrested. There is a specific case against him. He will be produced before the court,” said Dhanmondi Police Inspector (Operation) Md Russel in the morning.

Annie’s colleagues said that he is currently on bail and detaining him from his home late at night is not a positive sign.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, senior joint secretary general of the BNP, alleged that Annie was "treated like a robber" and picked up by the police even though he was out on bail in all cases.

“It means that the government wants to create panic among the people. No citizen can be arrested by the police like this late at night. This is a completely illegal and unconstitutional activity. I condemn such actions and demand the immediate release of Annie."
