Dhaka, May 11 (bdnews24.com) – A Dhaka special court Sunday sentenced former minister Mirza Abbas to eight years in jail for tax dodges.
The verdict also slapped a Tk 57 lakh fine on Abbas and in case of failure to pay, he will serve another year in prison.
Judge Shahed Nuruddin of the Special Judge's Court- 3, set up within the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban premises handed down the verdict.
The sentence comprises two terms—three years for concealing tax related information and five years RI for hiding information on assets acquired.
As the two sentences will be operative concurrently, the accused will have to serve for a total five years.
The sentence will be effective from the day of arrest of the accused.
Advocate Khurshid Alam represented the state while advocate Sanaullah Miah stood for the defence.
Rezaul Karim, deputy tax commissioner of National Board of Revenue filed the case on August 5, 2007.
During the taxation years 1990-91 to 2006-07, Abbas evaded paying Tk 59.79 lakh in taxes payable for acquired wealth of Tk 2.25 crore, according to the case details.
Mirza Abbas was arrested by the joint forces on Feb 25, 2007 while he came to submit wealth statements with the Anti Corruption Commission.
Abbas is facing some more cases on different charges including corruption.
