The EC’s decision to take Barguna-2 MP Showkat Hasanur Rahman (Rimon) to court was announced on Thursday.

EC Secretary Sirazul Islam told bdnews24.com the Barguna superintendent of police had been asked to file a case.

This is the first case the EC, led by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, is initiating against any MP.

Rahman had also allegedly violated the electoral code during the municipal elections held towards the end of last year. He was let off after he offered his apology.

The EC received complaints over the breach of code by Rimon and Pabna-2 Awami League MP Azizul Huq Arzu.

The MPs allegedly took part in the campaign of candidates and inaugurated development projects in violation of the code.

EC Secretary Islam said Arzu had been asked to explain his action.

Rimon did not respond to calls from bdnews24.com.

Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-Ul Alam Hanif said the party had learnt of the alleged violations when a delegation met the chief election commissioner.

He said they urged the EC to take action without going by party identities of those at fault.

“We will fully support the Election Commission in this regard,” he said.
