Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has accused some political parties and individuals of trying to create confusion and unrest in the country by capitalising on its ongoing problems.
The prime minister made the remarks at a discussion at the Bangladesh Krishibid Institute in Dhaka on Saturday, marking the 48th founding anniversary of the BNP.
Referring to the challenges facing the country, Tarique said the government was working to address problems inherited from both the period of the previous “fascist” government and the interim administration.
“We never claimed there are no problems. But we are noticing that some political parties and individuals are trying to capitalise on these problems and stir unrest in different ways.”
The prime minister said, “Of course the people of Bangladesh have given this government the responsibility of running the country. We will try our best to uphold the democratic principles and ethics.”
He also warned that those seeking to create disorder would face action under the law.
“As a government elected by the people, I want to say clearly that everyone needs to stay within their limits.”
Ziaur Rahman founded the BNP on Sept 1, 1978. The BNP's central programme marking its 48th founding anniversary began on Tuesday and concluded with Saturday’s discussion meeting.
