BNP chief Khaleda Zia is celebrating Eid with her family for the first time in more than six years.

The former prime minister is currently in London, staying at the residence of her elder son and BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman as she undergoes medical treatment.

On Tuesday, Tarique took her on a brief outing to a local park -- a moment that was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media.

In the video, Khaleda is seen being wheeled through the park by her personal aide, Md Masudur Rahman. Walking alongside them are Tarique Rahman and his daughter Zaima Rahman. Khaleda’s personal physician and BNP Standing Committee member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain was also there.

Speaking to bdnews24.com, Zahid said, “Yesterday, we helped her out of the car and wheeled around the park. The weather was pleasant, so we thought a short stroll would lift her spirits.”

“We thought the colourful flowers and open space would cheer her up. Her doctors had advised light movement, saying it would help improve her mental well-being and physical vitality.”

Khaleda, now 79, has been suffering from multiple health issues for years, including liver cirrhosis, heart problems, arthritis, kidney complications, and diabetes.

She was flown to London on Jan 8 by an air ambulance for advanced medical care. Upon arrival, she was admitted directly to The London Clinic, where she underwent 17 days of treatment. Afterwards, her doctors allowed her to move to her son’s residence, where her treatment continues.

Asked about her current condition, Zahid said: “Madam is stable, both physically and mentally. In fact, her mental state is much better than before.”

He added that doctors from The London Clinic have begun a comprehensive health assessment of Khaleda on Wednesday.

“Over the next four days, she will undergo several medical tests. The doctors will visit her at home, although she may need to go to the clinic for some tests,” he said.

As for when Khaleda might return to Bangladesh, Zahid said: “That decision will depend on the results of the tests. The doctors will review the reports before determining whether she is fit to travel.”

Her treatment is being overseen by liver specialist Prof Patrick Kennedy and Prof Jennifer Cross of The London Clinic.
