BNP announcing ‘jumbo’ committees joke of the year, says AL leader Obaidul Quader

The BNP’s 502-member National Executive Committee can be only compared to a ‘jumbo jet’, says senior Awami League leader Obaidul Quader adding that it was the ‘joke of the year.’

His comments came on Sunday during a discussion at the Dhaka University.

“Their jumbo jet committee is the joke of the year for Bangladesh’sdemocracy,” the road transport minister said.

On Saturday, the BNP named members of its 502-strong Executive Committee,nearly four and a half months into its term that began with the party'sNational Council held in March.

Over a dozen members of BNP leaders’ families have been named in the newcommittee, announced by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

“Mirza Fakhrul said yesterday that they would restore democracy with their502-member body. What I want to ask is, how do they name 502 members for a bodythat allows maximum 448 members?

“They have violated Bangladesh’s Constitution repeatedly, just as they havedone with their party’s charter,” said Quader.

On BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s call for a national unity against militancy, theminister said, “How do we get together when we mourn on Aug 15 and youcelebrate your birthday?”
