BNP nominee for Gazipur-2 M Manjurul Karim Roni and his wife, independent candidate Taposhi Tanmoy Chowdhury, have declared assets worth about Tk 402.5 million against liabilities exceeding Tk 1.4 billion in affidavits submitted to the Election Commission ahead of the 13th parliamentary polls.
The affidavits show that the couple’s combined bank loans are more than three times higher than their declared assets.
Roni, general secretary of Gazipur Metropolitan BNP, reported assets worth Tk 382.9 million, including Tk 234.9 million in cash, while his wife listed assets of Tk 19.6 million.
Roni’s loans, amounting to Tk 1.40 billion, were taken from IFIC Bank’s Gulshan branch in the names of his companies, Avalon Aviation Limited and Foster Trading International Limited. The loans were rescheduled on Dec 10.
Taposhi, however, declared no loans in her name.
The affidavits were submitted to the returning officer along with their nomination papers on Monday.
According to the disclosures, Roni’s annual income has been shown as Tk 941,275, while his wife’s income has been listed as Tk 550,000.
The affidavits show that Roni’s bank balance stands at only Tk 80,661. He also owns 500,500 shares in seven companies, valued at Tk 550,000.
He has declared furniture worth Tk 120,000, electronic goods worth Tk 50,000, and a car valued at Tk 3.05 million.
Taposhi has declared cash of Tk 2,540,621 and bank deposits of Tk 8,163. She owns 133,000 shares in five companies, valued at Tk 13.3 million.
She has also declared gold ornaments worth Tk 100,000, furniture worth Tk 100,000, and a car valued at Tk 3.1 million.
The affidavits show that Roni owns no agricultural land, but has 475.70 decimals of non-agricultural land in Salna, Gazipur, with a market value of Tk 666.2 million.
His wife owns 30.375 decimals of agricultural land valued at Tk 460,000.
According to the disclosures, nine cases are currently pending against Roni. These include two cases under the Negotiable Instruments (NI) Act over cheque dishonour and one case under the Artha Rin Ain. A further 12 cases filed against him in the past were disposed of in 2025.
Five cases are currently pending against Taposhi, including two under the NI Act, two under the Money Loan Court Act and one case under Section 408 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which is under trial in the Appellate Division. Two other cases against her were disposed of in 2025.
The affidavits state that in the 2025–26 fiscal year, Roni paid Tk 77,400 in income tax, while his wife paid Tk 10,000.
Although both have listed their occupation as business, no income from business has been shown.
Roni’s main source of income has been declared as house or property rent, amounting to Tk 9.4 million annually, along with Tk 1,275 from bank interest.
Taposhi’s income has been shown solely as Tk 550,000 from bank interest.
Roni did not mention his educational qualifications in the affidavit, while his wife’s education has been listed as a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom).
Both candidates are contesting parliamentary elections for the first time. Roni is 41 years old and Tapasi is 45.
Their permanent address is listed as South Salna, Gazipur City Corporation, while their present address has been given as House 81/A, Road 11, Baridhara Diplomatic Zone, Dhaka.
The Election Commission has said the information provided in candidates’ affidavits will be verified, and legal action may be taken if intentional false information is found.
Election observers say such affidavits help voters better understand candidates’ financial and legal standing, which is important for free and fair elections.
A total of 18 candidates, including Roni and Tapasi, have submitted nomination papers for the Gazipur-2 seat. Roni is the son of former Gazipur City Corporation mayor Prof Abdul Mannan.
Gazipur-2 constituency comprises wards 19 to 39 and 43 to 57 of Gazipur City Corporation, along with the Rajendrapur Cantonment area.
According to Election Commission data, the constituency has 804,333 voters, including 400,401 men, 403,919 women and 13 third-gender voters.
There are 272 polling centres in the constituency, with a total of 1,489 polling booths, including 1,399 permanent and 90 temporary booths.
