Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has joined a civic reception in Sylhet after unveiling a flood protection and riverbank beautification project along the Surma.

The meeting began at 11:30am on Saturday at Chandni Ghat.

Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Labour and Expatriates’ Welfare Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, Prime Minister’s Advisor Humaiun Kobir, and Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Quiyum Choudhury attended the event.

The premier’s spouse, Dr Zubaida Rahman, was also present.

Earlier at 10am, Tarique arrived at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet and visited the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal (RA).

Following the civic reception, he is scheduled to inaugurate a river re-excavation initiative of the Baisha River in Kashipur Union of Sylhet Sadar.

He will later offer Zuhr prayers and have lunch at the Circuit House before launching “Notun Kuri Sports-2026” at 3pm at Sylhet Stadium.

The programme aims to identify young sporting talent from district level and was a BNP election pledge.

At 5pm, he will address a party rally at the Shilpakala Academy in the city.

Tarique, the BNP chairman, launched the party’s formal election campaign from Sylhet on Jan 21 with a rally at the Alia Madrasa ground.

This is his first visit to Sylhet as prime minister.
