After 17 years in exile, Tarique Rahman has left London for Bangladesh, returning home with his family and ending a long wait for the BNP leaders and activists.
The BNP acting chief boarded a Biman Bangladesh flight at 12:15am Bangladesh time on Thursday with his wife Zubaida Rahman, and daughter Zaima Rahman.
The flight will stop in Sylhet before reaching Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport at 11:20am.
Tarique left his London residence and reached Heathrow Airport around 10:30pm Bangladesh time on Wednesday.
Leaders and activists of the UK unit of the BNP accompanied him to the airport and saw him off up to the security cordon.

The BNP has made extensive preparations to welcome its acting chairman. Party Standing Committee members are set to receive him at the airport, followed by a reception programme.
After arrival, Tarique will travel by road to Evercare Hospital. On the way, he will attend a brief reception arranged by the party along the 300 Feet Road, also known the 36 July Expressway.
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, convenor of the Tarique’s “Homecoming Committee”, earlier said a short programme would be held on the 300 Feet Road.
“There, he will thank the people of the country and offer gratitude to Almighty Allah,” he said.
After that, Tarique will proceed to Evercare Hospital and later move to house No. 196 on Gulshan Avenue, where he will stay.
On Friday, as part of the second day’s programme, he is expected to visit the grave of his father, late president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar after Jummah prayers.
From there, he will travel by road to Savar to pay tribute to the martyrs at the National Memorial.
Salahuddin said Tarique is also expected to complete formalities required to become a registered voter. He may also visit the grave of Sharif Osman bin Hadi and injured victims of the July Uprising at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation.
He added that the programme remains subject to final confirmation and details will be shared with the media in due course.
