Nomination papers for BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman have been collected for the Dhaka-17 constituency ahead of the 13th national election.
The papers were picked up on Sunday morning from the office of the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner in Segunbagicha by BNP chairperson's aide ABM Abdus Sattar, according to the party's media cell.
The move follows the BNP’s recent announcement that Tarique would contest the election from Dhaka-17 in addition to Bogura-6, marking a shift from the party’s earlier stance that only BNP chief and former prime minister Khaleda Zia would run in more than one constituency.
Tarique returned to Bangladesh on Dec 25 after more than 17 years in exile and had initially been expected to contest only from Bogura-6.
The decision to field him in Dhaka-17 has also cleared the way for BNP ally Andaleeve Rahman Partho, chairman of the Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), to run from his home seat of Bhola-1 instead.
Dhaka-17, which includes parts of Banani, Gulshan and Baridhara, had remained without a BNP candidate until the party confirmed Tarique's candidacy.
