The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will formally unveil its election manifesto for the parliamentary election on Friday.
Chairman Tarique Rahman will announce the manifesto at 3:30pm at the ballroom of Pan Pacific Sonargaon, party media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan has said.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will preside over the programme, while Nazrul Islam Khan, a Standing Committee member and chairman of the party’s central election steering committee, will moderate the event.
Tarique is leading the BNP in the upcoming election, making this his first time launching an election manifesto as party leader.
Historically, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia led the party and announced its manifestos during the fifth through ninth parliamentary elections.
In the 2018 general election, the BNP campaigned under the Jatiya Oikya Front while Khaleda Zia was imprisoned, leading Mirza Fakhrul to unveil the manifesto at a Gulshan hotel on Dec 18 that year.
The BNP, however, boycotted the 10th and 12th national elections held under what it describes as the “fascist” government of Sheikh Hasina.
Speaking about the manifesto, Mahdi Amin, spokesperson of the central election steering committee, said: “The BNP is a party of the masses and a party of grassroots empowerment. Under the guidance of our chairperson [Tarique], we have worked with people from all walks of life. Initially, we put forward 31 points and carried out programmes across every division, district, Upazila, union and ward in Bangladesh.”
“Based on that public engagement, and incorporating opinions from party units as well as affiliated wings and associate organisations, adjustments, additions and changes have been made in line with the timely demands to address people’s problems and change their fortunes. On that basis, the BNP is bringing forward its election manifesto.”
He said the vision and roadmap of the party’s top leadership have been given priority, while equal importance has been given on the real problems of ordinary people and what they want. “Our main goal is to design plans in a way that is practical and sustainable.”
The spokesperson said, “when our leader Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh, on that historic day, he said: ‘I have a plan.’ This plan is meant for the people’s empowerment, for their independence and self-reliance. Each plan is for the independence and self-sufficiency of people, and for protection and overall security of them.”
“We want to build a Bangladesh together where the people are empowered. At every stage of our manifesto, we have focused on people’s empowerment, state ownership by the people, freedom, rights, security and protection, and inclusive development — so that individuals and their families can live better lives from now on.”
“With detailed and comprehensive plans for every sector, we will propel Bangladesh forward together with its people, In Sha Allah.”
