The Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance has begun a long march from Dhaka to Chattogram to press its six-point demands.
The programme began with a rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel at 7am on Saturday. After the rally, a large convoy set off towards Chattogram shortly after 8:15am.
Several roadside rallies are scheduled along the route. These include Truckstand near Kanchpur Bridge in Narayanganj, Paduar Bazar Bishwaroad in Cumilla, Mohipal in Feni and Mirsharai in Chattogram.
The programme will culminate in a public rally at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram.
The Motijheel rally began with Quran recitation, followed by an opening speech from AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and coordinator of the 11-party alliance.
Other speakers included Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar; Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis Secretary General Mamunul Haque; Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) Member Secretary Mujibur Rahman Manju; Bangladesh Development Party Chairman Anwarul Islam Chan; Bangladesh Labour Party Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran; Khilafat Majlis Secretary General Fakhrul Islam; Jatiya Ganotantrik Party (Jagpa) Vice-President Rashed Pradhan; Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party Ameer Abdul Qayyum Sobhanie; and National Citizen Party Convener and Chief Whip of the opposition in parliament Nahid Islam and its Member Secretary Akhter Hossain.
The alliance is demanding implementation of the referendum verdict, trial of those responsible for the July killings, an end to shortages of electricity, oil, gas and fertiliser, and measures to curb extortion and corruption to control rising prices of essential commodities.
Its other demands include improving law and order and ending narrow partisanisation.
Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, the alliance's top leader, announced the long march and mass rally programmes from a sit-in at Dhaka's Muktangan on Aug 6.
According to the announced schedule, the alliance is set to hold long marches from Dhaka to Rangpur on Sept 19, Khulna on Oct 10 and Sylhet by train on Oct 24.
A mass rally is scheduled to be held in Dhaka on Nov 14.
