Islami Chhatra Shibir has held a mass gathering demanding full implementation of the July National Charter based on the referendum, justice for all mass killings, and protesting alleged attacks by Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal on several campuses, including three educational institutions in Dhaka.
Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami's student wing were seen carrying PVC pipes during the gathering on Wednesday.
The rally began at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital at 9am, before activists marched to the Raju Sculpture, where the programme concluded with a brief rally attended by current and former Shibir leaders.
Shafiqul Islam Masud, Jamaat MP for Patuakhali-2 (Bauphal), said Aug 5 should have been a day of celebration but had instead become a day to speak out against the ruling BNP's student front.
“It is a shame for Bangladesh, a shame for the BNP, and a shame for you, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.”
Addressing the prime minister directly, he said if Tarique failed to rein in Chhatra Dal, the outfit would seal his downfall faster than Bangladesh Chhatra League had sealed the Awami League's, forcing him out of Bangladesh once more.
Md Nurul Islam Bulbul, chief of Jamaat's Dhaka Metropolitan South unit and MP for Chapainawabganj-3, said Chhatra Dal and BNP set off on the same path once walked by Chhatra League and the Awami League.
He said Chhatra Shibir, together with the broader student community, was capable of resisting any “criminal activities” by Chhatra Dal aimed at seizing control of university campuses.
Alleging a conspiracy to erase the memory of July Uprising, he said the government and Chhatra Dal are “plotting” to crush the aspirations of the movement, and called for the referendum's popular verdict to be implemented to foil that scheme by BNP and its wing.
Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, assistant secretary general Jamaat-e-Islami and MP for Sirajganj-4 (Ullapara), called on authorities to identify and arrest police officers found aiding the attackers.
He warned that inaction would mean police were complicit in the violence.
He said the unrest on campuses served no one's interest, and cautioned that if the ruling side believed it could govern by driving out Shibir, it was repeating a policy Hasina had tried and failed, since Chhatra League deserted the streets when it mattered most.
Rafiqul urged an end to the path of violence.
In his address, Nurul Islam Saddam, president of Chhatra Shibir, said the BNP, the “biggest beneficiary of the July Uprising”, had stalled justice for the mass killings even after coming to power.
Despite two years passing, verdicts had been delivered in only six cases, none of which had been enforced, he added.
He also alleged that attempts were under way to restore hall control and "guest room" culture on campuses, warning that Shibir would resist if Chhatra Dal was not restrained.
