Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said restoring public confidence in police and improving the country's law and order situation are the government’s immediate priorities.
The premier made the remarks in a message issued Saturday ahead of Police Week 2026, which is set to begin on Sunday.
The message was posted on Tarique’s verified Facebook page on Saturday evening.
He will formally inaugurate the event with a colourful parade at the Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital.
Highlighting the transition to democracy, Tarique noted that a democratic government has been established through a free and fair election after more than fifteen years.
"People now want to see a state and society free from the culture of enforced disappearances, abductions, and fear," he said.
"The role of the police is paramount in maintaining an environment where there is no fear of injustice, misrule, or oppression."
He emphasised that while the police are indispensable for protecting lives and property, their task becomes significantly easier when they build a relationship of "trust and faith" with the citizens.
The prime minister urged police to take a more proactive role in tackling modern social challenges to ensure that democratic progress remains uninterrupted.
"Police must play a more effective role in preventing mob violence, curbing the influence of 'teen gangs ', and stopping the spread of narcotics," he said.
He also pointed to the recent general elections as evidence of the force's capability, saying that they proved they can perform efficiently when provided with a suitable and favourable environment.
Tarique added that the government views investment in police development as an essential part of public safety.
"In the changing global reality, the modernisation and capacity building of the police are indispensable," he said.
