A Dhaka court has framed charges against 13 people, including former Khulna-4 MP Abdus Salam Murshedy over the alleged embezzlement of government property in Dhaka.
Dhaka's Special Judge Md Abdus Salam passed the order on Monday, setting Aug 19 for recording testimony in the case, said defence lawyer Khademul Islam.
Murshedy was accused of embezzling 0.137 hectares of government property in Gulshan-2 residential area.
A writ petition had previously been filed seeking an investigation into house No. 29 on Road 104, Gulshan-2, “occupied” by Murshedy, claiming it to be an “abandoned property”.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Rajdhani Unayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) and the Public Works Department were made respondents among other government entities and officials in the petition filed on Oct 30, 2022
On Feb 6, 2024, the ACC sued 11 people, including the former RAJUK chairman.
Even though Murshedy was not named in that case, the ACC pressed charges against him and 12 others on Dec 31 that year after the ouster of the Awami League government.
However, Murshedy was arrested on Oct 1 after the July Uprising and has since been in jail.
Murshedy Produced After 1-hour Ultimatum
The Khulna-4 MP was produced before the court within two hours after it had warned the jail authorities and the state of action.
When the hearing began around 11:10am, the court was told that prison authorities had not produced Murshedy, citing illness.
The judge asked if the jail superintendent is a doctor or authorised to issue a medical certificate, said the defence lawyer.
"How did [jail superintendent] determine [Murshedy’s] health condition?” the judge asked.
"I’m giving you an hour to produce the suspect. Otherwise, I’ll take action against both the prosecution and the prison authorities."
The court officials immediately contacted the jail authorities who produced Murshedy in two hours, said Khademul.
