Hadi may be sent abroad for treatment: doctor

Sending Hadi abroad for medical treatment entirely depends on his family and the medical board overseeing him, a doctor says

Sharif Osman bin Hadi, an independent election hopeful for the Dhaka-8 constituency and convenor of the Inqilab Moncho platform, is still in critical condition and authorities are trying to organise advanced treatment for him abroad.

Hadi’s medical case summary has been sent to different hospitals in Singapore and Thailand. However, sending Hadi abroad for medical treatment entirely depends on his family and the medical board overseeing him.

Abdul Ahad, secretary of the National Health Alliance, an affiliate of the NCP, and a neurosurgeon taking part in Hadi’s surgery at Dhaka Medical College and member of his board, shared the information with the media outside Evercare Hospital on Sunday.

Ahad said, “His condition, which was critical, remains unchanged. His repeat CT scan on Sunday morning also showed no positive results. The injury of the brain stem damaged it (brain) severely. The oxygen shortage in his brain as become more prominent. He was given six bags of fresh blood and five bags of plasma.

We have seen that he has blood clots in different parts of the brain due to overflowing of blood.”

“The medical board said his physical condition remained unchanged and is still in a critical state. On Friday he had GCS-3 and it’s still the same.”

The physician said Hadi’s kidney were working. “Before the brain operation, his kidneys were not functioning, but now they are. He now has normal kidney function. Other organs are working with ventilation. His pulse and BP (blood pressure) are stable now. Please pray for him.”

The doctor said the person who shot Hadi was a professional. “He made a head shot. As a surgeon, I want to say that an expert hand performed it. He was shot from the right side. It speared the temporal bone and passed through the main part of the brain, the brain stem. This can’t be done without an expert hand. If the person wasn’t experienced, they could never shoot like that.”

Mentioning that part of the bullet still remained in the centre of Hadi’s brain, the physician said: “During the surgery on Friday, we found a bullet fragment in his head, it could be a casing or a shell. We were able to remove it during the operation. Another part remains in his brain stem. Another part passed through another side.”

“The bullet split and a portion came out, while another small part remained in the brain stem. We removed another cover during the operation."

When asked if it could be removed surgically, the doctor said, "In such cases, we consider the risk and benefit. The place where it’s stuck is in a deep seated area. There are a lot of veins there, which we call the circle of bulleys. On Friday, the surgery was mainly done to provide space to the brain so that the pressure eases.

"When we received him at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday, he had already undergone two cardiac arrests. Then, after giving him five cycles of CPR, he made a comeback," the doctor said.

Regarding taking Hadi abroad, he said: “The medical board will take the decision. If his family considers (taking him abroad) the medical board will focus on it.”

"His family has sent the case summary to several hospitals in Singapore and Thailand. After receiving feedback from the hospitals, his family will decide which hospital to take him to. In this case, we believe his family’s decision is final."

However, none of the hospitals has responded yet. Maybe they are studying the case summary, he said.
