Former food minister and Awami League leader Qamrul Islam has filed a petition with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) seeking a directive for advanced medical treatment.
The application was submitted on Tuesday, confirmed Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam.
The tribunal is expected to hear the matter on Wednesday.
Qamrul, a former lawmaker from the Dhaka-2 constituency, was arrested in Uttara on Nov 18 last year.
He faces multiple charges related to attacks on the students’ movement against discrimination during the July Uprising that toppled the Awami League government on Aug 5.
Concerns over Qamrul's health surfaced in May last year when he reportedly suffered a head injury after falling in a toilet while appearing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court for a graft case.
At the time, his counsel, Nasim Mahmud, claimed the former minister was battling various ailments, including stomach cancer.
The chief prosecutor noted that Qamrul’s legal team had verbally raised the health concerns on Monday before filing the formal written application the following day.
Aminul said the current prosecution would not mirror the "inhumane precedents" set by the previous administration regarding the treatment of political opponents.
"We believe the trial will proceed at its own pace, but as a human being, if an accused is genuinely ill and requires treatment, they must receive it," Aminul said.
