Nagorik Oikko President Mahmudur Rahman Manna has been hospitalised after experiencing chest pain.
He was admitted to Bangladesh Medical University Hospital in the capital late on Friday night, according to Razzak Shojib, a member of Nagorik Oikko’s central committee.
Speaking to bdnews24.com, Razzak said Manna began experiencing chest pain around 4pm and was taken to the hospital at about 11pm.
“The doctors have conducted several tests. The ECG report came back normal, but the troponin level was not good,” he said.
“You can call it a semi-heart attack. However, he is now out of danger.”
Doctors have advised that Manna remain under observation in the hospital for at least two days, Razzak added.
Manna, a long-time partner of the BNP-led political alliance, is contesting in the parliamentary elections from the Bogura-2 and Dhaka-18 constituencies.
Under the alliance’s seat-sharing arrangement, the BNP has conceded the Bogura seat to him.
Manna was previously the general secretary of the Chattogram University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) and vice-president of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU).
He also served as an organising secretary of the Awami League.
After being removed from his Awami League post in 2009, he formed Nagorik Oikko and later became its convenor. Ahead of the 2018 elections, he played a key role in the BNP-led electoral alliance, Jatiya Oikya Front.
In September 2024, Nagorik Oikko was registered as a political party by the Election Commission.
