Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA) faction President Khandaker Lutfur Rahman has been “critically” injured and hospitalised after being attacked with sharp weapons by a group of assailants on Bijoy Nagar Road in Dhaka.

The assault took place around 8pm on Monday, shortly after Lutfur left a meeting at the Gono Odhikar Parishad office.

JAGPA General Secretary Zakir Hossain said the attackers hacked Rahman indiscriminately with machetes as he was crossing the road, leaving him seriously wounded.

He was rushed to Islami Bank Central Hospital in Kakrail, where he remains under treatment.

According to Zakir, the party chief sustained injuries to his hands and legs and suffered significant blood loss.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir condemned the attack, saying in a statement that assaults on political leaders are part of “a deep conspiracy”.

He alleged the motive was to foil the general election.

The BNP leader demanded the immediate arrest of the attackers and their prosecution under the law.
