Mir Arshadul Hoque, the chief coordinator of the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) Chattogram Metropolitan unit, has announced his resignation in a statement on social media.

In a post on Facebook on Thursday, Arshadul said he was stepping down from all positions within the party. He also said he would no longer run for election from the Chattogram-16 (Banshkhali) constituency in the upcoming election.

Explaining his decision, Arshadul said he believed the party was moving in the “wrong direction”.

In the same post, he also welcomed BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman's return home after 17 years in exile.

In addition to his role as the chief coordinator for Chattogram city, Arshadul held several senior positions within the NCP, serving as central joint member secretary, a member of the Executive Council, media cell and the disciplinary committee. He also headed the party's environment cell.

On the reasons for his resignation, Arshadul, who had previously secured the NCP nomination for the Chattogram-16 seat, declined to elaborate further.

"I have resigned from all party positions. I have provided a detailed explanation on my Facebook post," he said.

Arshadul’s political journey began during his university years, where he worked as a campus correspondent. Following the 2024 mass uprising, he joined the National Citizens' Committee before joining the NCP.

His resignation coincides with Tarique’s homecoming, an event the politician pointedly noted in his statement. He also welcomed the exiled BNP leader.

He wrote: "I am making this announcement on a significant day, as BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman returns home after 17 years in exile. He is most welcome."

Reflecting on the party's direction, he continued: "The NCP began its journey with the promise of a new political settlement, born from the aspirations of the July Uprising. However, my experience over the last 10 months since the party's inception has led me to believe that this party and its leaders have utterly failed to keep those promises.

"Nothing remains of the dreams and potential that originally drew me to the NCP. I believe the party and a large section of its leadership are on the wrong path. I cannot continue on this trajectory. As of this moment, I have no political affiliation with the NCP, though personal relationships will remain. I wish them well."
