Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has declared an annual income of around Tk 1.2 million and total assets worth more than Tk 15 million in his election affidavit.

A comparison with his previous affidavit shows that while his annual income has increased by about Tk 52,000 over seven years, the value of his assets has grown more than two-and-a-half times.

Fakhrul is contesting in the election from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency as the BNP candidate. He was elected from the same seat in the 1996, 2001 and 2018 elections, although he did not take oath after winning in 2018.

According to the affidavit, Fakhrul is 77 years old and holds a postgraduate degree.

Records from the 2018 affidavit show his annual income at Tk 1.13 million. In the recent affidavit, his annual income has been shown as Tk 1.18 million, earned from agriculture, business, shares and consultancy fees.

This indicates that his annual income has risen by only Tk 51,700 compared with the affidavit submitted ahead of the 11th parliamentary election in 2018.

The income breakdown shows that he earns Tk 180,000 a year from agriculture and Tk 197,000 from business, mainly from shares in Hurmat Ali Market. He receives around Tk 800,000 as consultancy fees from two organisations and Tk 7,901 as bank interest.

In 2018, Mirza Fakhrul declared total movable and immovable assets worth Tk 6.21 million. In the recent affidavit, he has shown combined assets valued at Tk 15.28 million.

He currently holds Tk 12.56 million in cash, Tk 382,000 in bank deposits and Tk 143,000 in shares. He has also declared ownership of 116.6g of gold, a car and a double-barrel gun. Together, his movable assets are valued at Tk 13.37 million.

His immovable assets, including agricultural and non-agricultural land, partial ownership of a two-storey ancestral house in Thakurgaon town and market shares, have been shown at an acquisition value of Tk 1.91 million.

50 CASES

In his affidavit, Fakhrul has disclosed a total of 50 cases filed against him. He said he has been discharged from 47 cases and acquitted in the remaining three.

He said the cases were filed during the previous Awami League government and were allegedly intended to harass him for political reasons.

WIFE IS WEALTHIER

According to the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission, Fakhrul’s wife Rahat Ara Begum owns assets worth about Tk 24.4 million, nearly Tk 10 million more than her husband.

Her movable assets are valued at Tk 12.13 million, including 233.2g of gold, while her immovable assets are worth Tk 12.06 million.

She owns agricultural and non-agricultural land with an acquisition value of Tk 5.18 million, 0.04 hectares of land in Thakurgaon valued at Tk 3.97 million, and 0.13 hectares of land in Purbachal residential area with an acquisition value of Tk 854,000.

Rahat has also declared ownership of a 1,950 sqft flat in Gulshan-2, valued at Tk 2.05 million, and a car worth Tk 2.65 million.

In the 2025-26 fiscal year, Fakhrul paid Tk 72,889 in income tax, while his wife paid Tk 120,585. Her annual income has been shown as Tk 1.25 million.

At the end of the affidavit, Fakhrul affirmed that he is not a dual citizen and is fully eligible to be a member of parliament under Article 66(2) of the Constitution.
