Newly sworn-in President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar.

The president laid a wreath at the memorial around 10:30am on Saturday to honour those who died in the 1971 Liberation War.

He was then given a guard of honour by a contingent from the three branches of the armed forces.

Mirza Fakhrul also signed the visitors' book at the memorial and planted a tree there.

The president will return directly to his residence on Minto Road from the memorial, his office said.

He is scheduled to move into Bangabhaban, the presidential palace, on Sunday, according to his office.

Mirza Fakhrul was sworn in as the country's 23rd president on Friday evening, after serving for years as the secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, or BNP.

He was elected president with 255 votes in an election held in the parliamentary chamber on Thursday.
