The funeral prayer of former chief election commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda will be held at the Gulshan Society Mosque after Maghrib prayers on Monday.

He will be laid to rest at the Banani Graveyard after the funeral prayer, Gulshan Society said in a message.

Huda was elected president of the Gulshan Society three times. The organisation expressed deep shock over his passing.

Before the prayer service, a civic tribute will be held in his honour at the Gulshan Society Lake Park at 5pm.

Huda, who led the ninth national parliamentary election, passed away on Saturday morning at his residence in Gulshan.

He is survived by his wife and daughter.

The former bureaucrat was appointed as chief election commissioner on Feb 5, 2007, during the military-backed caretaker government led by Fakhruddin Ahmed. He served in that role until 2012.

Under his leadership, the Election Commission, assisted by the military, prepared a photo-based voter list, initiated dialogues for electoral law reforms, introduced party registration requirements, and piloted the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs).

After a long delay, his commission conducted the ninth national election on Dec 29, 2008, with a voter turnout of over 87 percent.
