Former lawmaker from Lakshmipur-4 and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSaD-Inu) vice president Mosharraf Hossain has died.

He was 78.

He passed away at a private hospital in Dhaka around 1:30am on Sunday while undergoing treatment, said Mahbube Elahi Sani, a relative of Mosharraf and a professor at Lakshmipur Government College.

A freedom fighter, Mosharraf was elected MP from Lakshmipur-4 (Ramgati and Kamalnagar) as a candidate of the combined opposition in the 1988 fourth national election.

He was a central leader of the then undivided Chhatra League in the 1960s and served as vice-president of Dhaka University’s Shahidullah Hall student union.

During the Liberation War, he was a zonal commander of the Mujib Bahini or Bangladesh Liberation Force (BLF) in Noakhali and Hatiya.

In the 2024 national election, he contested the Lakshmipur-4 seat as a candidate of the 14-party alliance under the boat symbol.

He had been suffering from age-related complications for a long time. He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters.

According to the family, his funeral will be held on Sunday after Asr prayers at Alexander Pilot High School ground in Ramgati Upazila.
