Indian Union minister Pralhad Joshi has been given additional charge of the education ministry following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan amid protests over exam paper leaks, NDTV reports.
The President’s office confirmed his appointment in a communique after accepting Pradhan’s resignation.
Joshi, currently India’s Union minister for food and consumer affairs, said he accepted the responsibility with a sense of duty and humility and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He said the past 12 years of Modi’s government had seen many historic achievements.
He also credited Pradhan with implementing the National Education Policy over the past 4-5 years. He said several important initiatives had been undertaken, resulting in significant progress in the country’s new education system.
Joshi said he would work to the best of his ability under the prime minister’s guidance and fulfil his responsibilities with dedication.
Pradhan, 57, resigned on the 35th day of protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over exam paper leaks. In his resignation letter, he said he was stepping down to prevent “anti-national forces” from exploiting the situation.
He said he had spent more than four decades working for students, teachers and educational reform and had always believed a robust, inclusive and visionary education system was the cornerstone of a strong nation.
Hours after his resignation, Cockroach Janta Party spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, speaking at a joint press conference with Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, announced that the protesters had ended their demonstration “in good faith” after the Centre assured them it would meet their demands.
