A landslide in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area has killed six people, with rescue teams continuing to search for survivors trapped beneath debris.
The incident occurred around 3:48am at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, where a portion of a hillock collapsed onto two to three houses, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade.
Five to six people are initially feared trapped beneath the debris, NDTV reports.
BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Avinash Dhakne visit the affected site to assess the situation.
Tawde announces financial assistance of Rs 300,000 for the families of those killed. The aid will be disbursed through the District Collector's Office.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Shinde says several people remain feared trapped under the debris as rescue operations continue.
"Rescue operations are under way, with emergency response teams and local authorities continuing efforts at the site. While we cannot confirm the exact number at this stage, it is suspected that three to four people may still be trapped under the debris," he was quoted as saying by the Indian outlet.
The bodies of those killed are sent to a hospital for further procedures, Shinde says, adding that Ghatkopar Police will take necessary legal action and investigate the incident.
Rescue operations are being conducted by teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Two injured people are admitted to hospital. They are identified as Sohel Ansari, 18, who suffered a head injury, and Mohamad Ansari, 14, who suffered a back injury. Both are reported to be in stable condition.
The rescue teams are continuing efforts to clear the debris and locate anyone who may still be trapped.
