Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has taken a swipe at the all-vegetarian menu served during the BRICS Summit hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Modi hosted a gala dinner for BRICS leaders on Saturday featuring a selection of regional Indian delicacies, all of them vegetarian, Hindustan Times reports.
The summit was attended by leaders from China, Russia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Egypt.
Rahul did not directly refer to the BRICS dinner menu but shared a photograph of a lunch spread featuring “Chole Bhature” on his social media accounts.
The leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha wrote that 80 percent of Indians are non-vegetarian and praised Indian non-vegetarian food, while also calling his sister’s Chole Bhature delicious, according to the Indian daily.
Pawan Khera Slates Govt
Congress MP Pawan Khera also criticised the government over the vegetarian-only menu and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of imposing dietary preferences, Hindustan Times said.
Khera said India is a diverse country with multiple cuisines and some of the world’s finest non-vegetarian delicacies, which are enjoyed by people around the world.
He questioned why the Modi government had chosen to leave out that part of India’s food culture from the menu.
