India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to take oath to form the government in West Bengal on May 9, NDTV said citing sources involved in the process.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to coincide with Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, a date party insiders say is being chosen to underscore a symbolic new chapter for the state, the report said on Wednesday.
The BJP’s West Bengal unit President Samik Bhattacharya confirmed the development.
“The oath-taking ceremony of the new chief minister of West Bengal will take place on the 9th of May,” ANI quoted him as saying.
The election results on Monday decisively ended Mamata Banerjee's 15-year tenure as chief minister and that of her Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Out of 294 constituencies, the BJP won 207 seats while the TMC saw its tally reduced to 80 seats, a sharp decline from the 215 it secured in 2021.
The result marks a tectonic shift in the political landscape of the eastern Indian state, which borders Bangladesh.
The date for the BJP government's oath-taking emerged while Banerjee was refusing to resign as the state chief minister.
Two senior officials from the Election Commission of India are scheduled to arrive in Kolkata from New Delhi on Wednesday to hand over the election results gazette to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Kumar Agarwal.
CEO Agarwal is expected to formally brief the state's Governor RN Ravi. After that, the governor will invite the outgoing chief minister to tender her resignation in line with the constitutional protocol.
Subsequently, Governor Ravi is likely to request Banerjee to continue as the caretaker chief minister until the new government is sworn in, ensuring seamless administrative continuity in the state.
The swearing-in is poised to be a landmark event in Bengal’s political history, said the report, adding that official announcements would be made shortly as preparations are in full swing.
