Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee has been hospitalised after being heckled and allegedly pelted with eggs while visiting party workers affected by post-election violence in India's West Bengal.
The incident occurred in the South 24 Parganas on Thursday as Abhishek travelled to meet families of TMC supporters who claimed they had been targeted following the party's defeat in the state assembly election, reports NDTV.
Videos circulating on social media showed crowds surrounding the TMC general secretary, shouting slogans, and accusing him of corruption.
Police later escorted him from the area.

Following the incident, Abhishek was taken to a hospital, where TMC chief and former chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited him.
Abhishek alleged the attack was a “planned” one, and criticised an “inadequate police presence” in the area, NDTV says.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denied involvement in the incident.
State BJP President Samik Bhattacharya said the confrontation reflected public anger over TMC’s record in government and rejected allegations that BJP supporters had organised the attack.
TMC leader Derek O'Brien condemned the incident, alleging that Abhishek’s safety had been put at risk, questioning security arrangements.
The confrontation comes days after another TMC leader, Saugata Roy, was reportedly heckled in his constituency following the party's election defeat.
The BJP recently secured a majority in the West Bengal assembly, ending Trinamool's 15-year stronghold.
Since the election, the party has faced internal criticism and unrest, with some leaders attributing the defeat to public dissatisfaction over allegations of corruption and governance failures, according to NDTV.
