India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval heads to Beijing on Monday for the 25th round of border talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, with both sides likely to focus on stability and de-escalation, according to media reports.
The two officials are designated “Special Representatives” under a mechanism established in 2003 to address the 3,488-km boundary dispute, NDTV reported.
The dialogue stalled for nearly five years after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash and the subsequent military standoff in eastern Ladakh.
Talks resumed in December 2024, followed by another round in New Delhi in August last year. Tuesday’s meeting will be Doval’s first special representatives’ session in Beijing since the dialogue restarted.
Both sides are scheduled to review the October 2024 disengagement agreement and assess whether calm along the Line of Actual Control has held.
Beijing says the border situation is “generally stable”, the report said.
De-escalation, boundary delimitation and broader mechanisms for managing border areas are also likely to feature.
India will look to raise cross-border terrorism, an issue it brought up during the previous round, according to the Indian news outlet.
Doval and Wang discussed “gradual normalisation” when they met in June on the sidelines of a BRICS security officials’ gathering, although that was not a formal boundary dialogue.
The thaw has extended to direct flights, visa rules and the Kailash-Mansarovar pilgrimage. Bilateral trade also reached a record level in 2025.
The talks come ahead of a possible visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit later in September.
