The death toll from a building collapse in India’s capital New Delhi has risen to seven, with at least 11 people rescued from the debris so far, News18 reports.
Around 20 to 25 students may still be trapped under the debris, while some residents have reported receiving calls from people believed to be inside the collapsed building, the Indian news outlet said.
The five-storey building in South West Delhi’s Satya Niketan housed a boys’ paying-guest accommodation near Delhi University’s South Campus.
It collapsed around 1:30pm local time on Sunday while repair work was under way.
Delhi Police said efforts are under way to trace those allegedly connected to the incident, The Hindu reported.
A case has been filed against the building’s owner Hariram Bansal and others, it said.
Multiple agencies, including Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, the National Disaster Response Force and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, have been involved in the rescue operation.
The PG accommodation was called “Hostel Daze”. Locals said the building, comprising a basement and five floors, was at least 50 years old.
